Parents of the Nation 2000

"It is an honor to congratulate you on being chosen as "National Parents of the Year 2000"...your twenty years of community service has influenced many families and improved their parenting skills. I applaud your commitment to this important cause..." - Wayne T. Gilcrest, Member of Congress"

John and Cheryl Carnwath exhibit the enthusiastic commitment, experience, and example that have supported and inspired thousands of families throughout nearly 20 years of active community service.  As parents of 4 children the Carnwaths are well aware that it takes full time, consistent, and vigilant involvement to guide young people to make the right choices that will lead them to productive and fulfilling futures.

The Carnwaths devoted themselves to the tasks of parenting and supporting other parents in their efforts to build strong, resilient families. John and Cheryl organized a Children's Fair in order to help parents address their questions and concerns ranging from health issues to child rearing and connect to family-focused resources in the county and state.  As a result, Camp Blaze was established in 1992 with a mission to define, develop, and implement programs to meet the ever-changing needs of today’s families.

The Carnwaths were entered into a national competition sponsored by the Parents’ Day Council in recognition of the 1994 legislation signed by President Clinton designating the fourth Sunday in July as Parents’ Day.  The Council searches for parents who set an exceptional example as parental role models by demonstrating the finest qualities of unconditional love for their children and serving the needs of parents and families in their community.  John and Cheryl were nominated by a family who had gone through several of their programs.  They were celebrated  at a Maryland State House ceremony for their winning county and state levels in the competition.  They were chosen and honored as National Parents of the Year 2000 at a congressional reception on Capitol Hill.  The Carnwaths continue to play a crucial role in shaping lives and assisting community institutions to develop family-friendly policies and practices.
